IB English A has two routes. Language and Literature mixes literary works with non-literary text types (news articles, advertising, political speeches, image-based texts), which is now the more commonly taken course. Literature focuses purely on literary texts: novels, plays, poetry, and short stories. Both run at SL and HL. The right choice depends on whether a student prefers analysing a wider range of text types or going deeper into literary works.

The College Board runs two distinct AP English courses. AP English Language and Composition focuses on rhetorical analysis of non-fiction prose, argumentation, and synthesis essays using multiple sources. AP English Literature and Composition focuses on prose, poetry, and drama analysis, with a literary-criticism approach. Many US-curriculum students take both, usually AP Language in Grade 11 and AP Literature in Grade 12. We tutor for both exams.
